The Educational Process
The DCW offers one of the most extensive courses of education in witchcraft available. Our studies cover everything you’ll need to be an effective individual witch, as well as teach you how to work in groups.
Education in the DCW occurs in phases. Each phase presents different levels of information that is based upon the craft mysteries you receive at initiation. Teaching is conducted on a weekly basis, usually in a group class setting that focuses on discussion, exploration and application of the topics presented that week.
Education begins with “The Witch’s Primer” – a book written by one of our Craft elders. This book covers the basics of Wicca including some of our philosophies, ritual structure, tools, elements, magical basics and divination. This class usually is presented as a series of 8 – 10 lessons and gives you the opportunity to get to know your other classmates, feel out your teacher as well as give you some magical tools and skills to use as your begin your studies.
The main part of your DCW education starts with “The First Book of Wisdom” – this is the first book that is strictly applicable to our tradition. In this book you’ll read about The Legends (a series of metaphorical stories that are used later in your education to explain deeper magical concepts), The Tenets (philosophical ideas for you to ponder and begin to understand the witch’s perspective on the world), and The Landmarks (the rules of operation for the coven as well as the “bill of rights” for every member. You’ll go through this book at least three times with your class (which usually takes about 3 months), and learn about who we are as a tradition and how we operate. At the end of this class, you can elect to apply for initiation and if your teacher sees your readiness and sincerity in continuing, they will initiate you in the Craft.
Initiation into the Craft makes you an Apprentice, at which point you are under the guidance and tutelage of the Priesthood. You can then begin to learn the Second Book of Wisdom which covers over 50 lessons in magic, meditation, personal evolution, goal planning, nutrition and healthy living, divination, astrology, and more. You’ll also learn in-depth lessons on the zodiac and how to apply it to personal wisdom. The Second Book of Wisdom will teach you to be an effective individual magician and witch. This course usually lasts at least 13 months. During this time the apprentice also goes to monthly ceremonies where they learn hands-on application of spell casting and other magical skills, and they also attend monthly Roundtable discussions led by the High Priesthood where they deepen their understanding of the Craft. At the end of this period of study, they can apply for initiation to the Fellowship of the Craft. If their teacher deems them ready, they will be initiated and can then complete the last leg of their education.
The final leg of training consists of our most sacred teachings that show you how to apply your magical knowledge within a group setting in a coven. After covering these 7 lessons, the new Fellow of the Craft can then apply for membership to the coven. There are a few more lessons after acceptance in the coven at which point they are a fully educated Fellow of the Craft, member of their Coven and take over their own personal continuing studies of spirituality and magic crafting.
